Assembly Line Influence

I have been exploring my use of my time as a factory worker in the Midwest. This is a strong perspective in my work. The use of repetition is shown in the use of gag items

A new Influence in my work

Anselm Reyle is having a big impact on my work right now.

Floor Treatment?

I'm having issues with floor treatment. I've been thinking about custom made casino chips but I'm looking at the mylar sheet shredded instead.

MFA TIMELINE/GUIDELINE FOR THESIS

MFA THESIS CHECKLIST/TIMELINE

This is a basic outline or checklist of the things I need to do before graduation. While this may not be a complete list, this is a list for: “GAG REFLEX”. This thesis is explained on the artist statement provided. This is also a basic timeline.

Artist’s Statement.
Rough Draft of Thesis.
Art work on “Gag Reflex” until now.
Blog on Blogger.com under: www.jfilakthesis.blogspot.com
Rough sketch of Samuel Dorsky Museum and basic plan for thesis show.
Dorsky Proposal of materials when we met.
Show Cards
Continue to create work.
Thesis Rewrite.
Everything else listed MFA Requirement Sheet.

Upon return on August 23rd 2010 I will be submitting a Artist’s Statement, that has been posted on the blog as listed above. I will be submitting a rough draft thesis, that will need further research, but I believe is well underway with my proposal “GAG REFLEX”. I have been working on a rough Rhino sketch of the Dorsky and will present a that when meeting for installation set up with the museum staff. That date has yet to be determined. I will continue to work on my art in studio as I have been all summer.Dates to vary on studio work but I have a good handle on this as of right now. I will start working on show card ideas as soon as a few more pieces for my installation are done. Upon further research I will rewrite and submit a copy for review to the College Writing Center. That date will be as soon as research is concluded. I will work with faculty to continue to explore and develop my thesis.dates will vary on this one. Upon All Systems Go, I send out show cards with dates and times to be printed. I will continue installation development until install. dates to vary as well. I will submit a a copy of the thesis in accordance to the MFA guidelines. This date was stated as one week before show date. Any and all others issues will be addressed as needed and when needed according to any dates needed. This is a basic MFA guideline/timeline for my thesis “Gag Reflex’.

Thesis Direction Proposal

The work that I have presented here up to this point has cross referenced the social and political state within the contemporary culture of the United States, especially that of consumerism. I have attempt to appropriate in a discourse conducive to awareness and change within these social boundaries. This concept which I found in the end to be a very hypocritical way to think, as I myself am woven within the very modern day fabric of consumer culture I was responding too. This unsuccessful exploration led me to explore another path that, rather then just a mere reactionary approach to contemporary issues, to one of perhaps a surreal approach with a light heart underscore yet, one that could encompass a vast social insight to the things that bind our pure spirit or the child like state of mind one is bestowed with. This state of being or condition, in my view, is where over time and age complacency emanates.
I believe my aesthetic language resonates between various artistic discourses to cross pollination approaches and various strategies to which I believe is conducive to exploration of this subject matter. I have begun to appropriate various visual languages and symbolism throughout art history in an attempt to invert if not integrate various classical and semi contemporary motifs and there symbolic meaning into my own core nucleus or research upon the restraint of the spirit. It’s within this framework of cultural consciousness, or better yet,”Cultural Capital” that I seek to; through a sort of, gag reflex show the current state of affairs within society as I perceive them. I use materials of a consumer banality nature, that perhaps overlaps the historical discourse in art and even contemporary culture to drive forth a message that I hope the society viewing can if not fully understand at least take solace in. I will attempt to achieve this goal by using various traditional sculptural methods and cultural symbolism. By inverting the artistic discourse and using social metaphors to achieve cohesive discourse within my work. Through this approach, I hope to unmask a consciousness of complacency within our culture, one that specifically deals with the gag reflex of our times.
